Written by on 05/09/2014

Just a few weeks left to enter the 2014 Islands Songwriting Contest.

Deadline for entries: midnight on Friday, May 30th

This is the 5th year the Cowichan Folk Guild has presented the Islands Songwriting contest, open to residents of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

This contest is an excellent opportunity for all Islands songwriters to gain recognition for their talent. The theme of the contest this year is History. Don’t take the theme too literally, think outside the box.

Nine songwriters from each region will be selected and they will perform their song for an audience and a panel of judges who will vote for their favourite.

Islands Folk FestivalThe contest is divided into 3 regional semifinals to be held in June:

1. The North Island – Tues June 17th in Courtney

2. The Central Island – Sat June 14th in Duncan

3. The South Island – Sun June 15th in Victoria

The 9 semi-finalists (3 from each region) will perform their songs on opening night (Fri, July 18th) of the 30th Anniversary  Islands Folk Festival where 3 winners will be selected.

The first place winner will receive a professionally produced and recorded version of his or her song from Zak Choen at Woodshop Recording Studios in Duncan, an additional performance at the Festival, and radio airplay.
