CFUV listeners might enjoy the film BORN TO BE BLUE which screens at Cinecenta on April 4th and 5th at 7:00 and 9:10pm.
It comes as a pleasant surprise that Robert Budreau’s Chet Baker film is not a Chet Baker biopic at all. It is, instead, a film about a character who shares a name and biographical similarities with Chet Baker, taking the legendary West Coast jazz musician’s life as though it were a chord chart from which to launch an improvised set of new melodies.
Upending the conventions of the rise-and-fall formula while still offering a relatively straightforward narrative, the film is anchored by an Ethan Hawke performance that ranks among the best of his career. –Variety
The movie catches up with Baker after he had fallen into a downward spiral of heroin and despondency. Come 1967, Baker wanted to make a comeback. Budreau aims to chart his return in all of its idiosyncratic beauty. –The Playlist
