CFUV Does Levitation Vancouver 2016! Friday

Written by on 06/18/2016

Trevor back at it, with a recap of Levitation on Friday!

” Levitation Vancouver’s first day is down, after a big venue switch from The Malkin Bowl to the Commodore Ballroom, announced earlier last week. Many people were missing being out in the sun to enjoy the music, but the indoor shows had their benefits. The bands had great presence, and there was an improvement in sound and lights. The line-up  for the opening day did seem a little scattered. Going from the mellow jangle of Louise Burns, to the grunge styled punk of White Lung, then jumping to the vintage garage melodies of The Allah-Las. The crowd anticipated the headliners, and the vibe was positive, and energetic, despite being indoors on a summer day.  A big loss was felt, however, with the inability to walk around Stanley park and visit all the interesting vendors and art installations scattered through the grounds. Open air, the smell of food trucks, and the trees overhanging were all welcome components to last year’s event.

The night shows of the festival have tended to be more specific to the genres that Levitation was originally about, and the Cobalt certainly held true to that last night. A line-up of very talented musicians who worship vintage tones, spaced out riffs, and creating soundscapes of amazing noise. All this charged with the visuals by live oil projectionist Lance Gordon, who heads Mad Alchemy out of San Francisco. Layers of colour streamed across the venue holding the audience captive even between sets, and pulled in an atmosphere that is hard to compare to. Sacri Monti, Black Mastiff, and Heron Oblivion, all performing their own massive, raucous sound could not have been better.

This evening the Commodore will host a great line-up including Cherry Glazer, Hinds, Thee Oh Sees, The Growlers, and Flying Lotus. Afterward, some very good night shows will take place at The Rickshaw, Cobalt, and Imperial focussing on different stylings of psyched out groups accompanied by various visual artists lighting the stage.”

Levitation seems to be treating Trevor well! #cfuvdoeslevitation
