CFUV Does Sled Island 2016! Day 3

Written by on 06/26/2016

Check out the ins and outs of Sled Island Day 3!!

“There was a few disappointing cancelled events, the Seth Bogart DJ Set at the Broken City Patio was cancelled due to the rain but the rest of the bands were moved inside, and The Basement Demons cancelled their show at Tubby Dog.

Many venues reached capacity including Dicken’s Pub for Psychic TV, Central United Church for Tortoise, and there was a huge lineup at the #1 Royal Canadian Legion to see The Sonics.

For their 25th anniversary, Mint Records hosted a free event at Commonwealth featuring Victoria’s own Fountain as the headliner! The Lineup also included Jay Arner, Faith Healer, Supermoon, Heaven For Real, Tough Age, and TV Ugly. Hailing from Halifax, Heaven For Real’s whimsical guitar riffs was excellently supported by energetic drumming, resulting in a filling sound that the vocals folded into seamlessly. I will also mention that after their set there was a snack break in which all venue-goers were given free snacks with calming piano music playing in the background, let me tell you, after three straight days of music, concerts, general rowdiness, it really did feel like heaven (for real)—don’t judge me for making the pun!

Supermoon ensued with a catchy upbeat set that made me feel like I was in the party scene of an indie movie starring Michael Cera. The Vancouver four-piece was well received by the crowd with a fair share of the audience mouthing and singing the words along with them. Surprisingly sincere, Jessica Jalbert of Faith Healer established a familiar connection with the audience that remained for the duration of the psych-pop set. The Edmonton band proceeded to thrill the crowd with licking basslines, twisting guitar riffs, and a dab of synth. Jay Arner and his band took the synth up a notch and delivered a classic pop-rock performance made all the more endearing by his somewhat shy stage presence. When he introduced his band they did that thing where each member does a little solo and then when it came to be his turn he said: “I like to let my guitar do the talking” as if they were on a live television show in the 60’s.

I ended up at Broken City to catch the last few songs from Vancouver’s Sightlines, whose latest album was produced by Jay Arner. These power-pop punks had the crowd nodding along to each anthem-driven song and were fittingly followed by grungy punk-rockers from Montreal, Astral Gunk.

Johnny De Courcy followed with another exaggeratedly theatrical performance in which he crowd surfed and managed to pull his saxophone out of thin air and play the sexy sax solo in “Master Manipulator” while still crowd surfing! Many became JDC converts after that, purchasing T-shirts and records, but the party wasn’t over yet! Duchess Says headlined the bill at Broken City and it transformed every single member of the audience. This band blends aggressively danceable electro-punk with the ungodly force of nature that is lead-singer Annie-Claude Deschênes to create music that will enter the parts of your soul that you didn’t even know you had, rip them out and eat them, and then puke them back at you. Trust me, you will love it! As we thrashed in the audience, Annie-Claude became our priestess, we did anything she said. We danced harder, the crowd parted for her, when she picked up a plastic bag full of red paint and started painting it on herself and others, we eagerly reached for her red hands, we held her body up as she crowd surfed, and when she re-entered the crowd she had us all lie on our backs on the floor for the song. Limbs over and under limbs, we basked the flames of her powerful energy! “
