CFUV @ VFF: Kick-off post from Troy

Written by on 02/07/2015

Victoria Film Festival kicked off last night!

I missed opening night but there are still many films that have garnered my attention that are playing over the week. Here are a few trailers of some that have me excited.

Trick Or Treaty?
Alanis Obomsawin’s newest documentary concerning the people of Treaty 9 and the supposed relinquishment of their sovereignty over traditional lands. This is a film I hope I can make as the topic is close to my interest in history. I fear it is playing at a time that might not work for my schedule. Here is hoping that I can make it! Showing is on Sunday Feb 8th 6:00 pm at The Vic Theatre.

The Tribe
Director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy has created a film that perhaps has the most intriguing appeal for myself. It is entirely in sign language with no subtitles or music. As someone who does not know sign this will prove to be an different film going experience. Showing for this film will be on Wednesday Feb 11th 9:45 pm at Odeon 1.

Everything Will Be
This documentary from Julia Kwan deals with the shifting landscape of Vancouver’s Chinatown. What should be an interesting look at gentrification and reflection on change in a culturally significant part of Vancouver’s history and city. Showing will be on Saturday Feb 14th 2:00 pm at The Vic Theatre.

Miss Julie
A film I was excited for before it was even announced for VFF is Liv Ullmann’s Miss Julie. Most know Ullmann as the actress in many great Bergman films and I look forward to watching her direct this adaptation of a August Strindberg play with Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton. Showings will be on Thursday Feb 12 6:30 pm and Sunday Feb 15th at Odeon 2.

Hopefully I get to see all of these and more films over the next week!
