CFUV @ VFF: Review of ‘An Eye For Beauty’

Written by on 02/11/2015

This past Saturday at VFF I got a chance to catch the new film from Denys Arcand, Le règne de la beauté or An Eye For Beauty. It follows Luc, played by Eric Bruneau, a Quebec architect who has everything in his life, a successful career, friends, and wife. The film is centred around the time in his life that he meets a Toronto woman, Lindsay, while serving on a architectural committee. The film almost falls into the trap of a typical infidelity within a marriage trope but rises above with Luc’s life coming apart at the seems during the time of his affair. Luc’s wife Stephanie, played by Melanie Thierry, is a outstanding in this role. Arcand brings life to the film through his portrayal of depression and a couples response to what it brings to a relationship. There are some very nice touches with the cinematography, especially the scenes of the group of friends playing various sporting activities in slow motion. It was only playing once this week at VFF and I would still recommend giving An Eye For Beauty a chance.
