CFUV @ VFF: Review of ‘Two 4 One’
Written by Festival Coverage on 02/13/2015
Making its way to theatres in the city it was created in for the first time, Two 4 One follows the story of Adam. He’s a trans man faced with a series of tough choices when he finds himself pregnant after helping ex-girlfriend Miriam with an artificial insemination kit. Navigating his own desires along with the realities of his relationships, health care, and employer, the film stays with him until the viewer finds out what Adam ultimately decides.
It’s encouraging to see a feature-length film where a transgender character isn’t relegated to a small side role. While introducing serious topics regarding trans experiences as well as pregnancy, the film maintains a lighthearted mood true to its romcom designation. In the wrong hands this plot could have had dismaying results, but the cast and crew of Two 4 One present it in a genuine and well-thought-out way. The characters are endearing and very relatable, with realistic dialogue that suits them well. Original music and crisp visuals help round off the modern feel of the story. The result is a quirky upbeat romance that lends itself well to its Valentine’s Day showing at the Victoria Film Festival.
Another refreshing aspect of Two 4 One is its locale. Not only did award-winning local filmmaker Maureen Bradley film the movie here on Vancouver Island, she also based it here. Victoria residents can look forward to seeing familiar sites on the big screen.
There are a couple chances to catch Two 4 One here at its hometown premiere this weekend. Tickets for both of the highly-anticipated showings have already sold out, but if you’re using a pass you may be able to grab a seat for the 6:30pm screening on February 14 or the noon showing the following day.
